John K. Sorensen, Iowa Bankers Association

John SorensenJohn Sorensen is president and CEO of the Iowa Bankers Association. The IBA is the principal advocate for banking in the state of Iowa. Sorensen also provides direction to the association’s service companies, including Iowa Bankers Insurance and Services and Iowa Bankers Mortgage Corporation. These organizations offer a broad range of services to banks to better help them meet the needs of their communities.

Sorensen is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. He is a director emeritus for the University of Northern Iowa’s Business School Executive Advisory Board. He achieved the professional designation of certified association executive (CAE) in 1991, meeting requisite standards of experience and education in the field of association management. He is a past president of the Iowa Society of Association Executives.

Sorensen is past chairman of the Alliance of State Banking Associations and has served on the American Bankers Association board of directors. He has also served on the ABA Government Relations Council. He is a member of the board and executive committee of Shazam, Inc., a national electronic funds transfer network. He also is past chairman of the Graduate School of Banking in Madison, Wisconsin.

Sorensen was the recipient of the 2006 Association for Business and Industry Leadership for Iowa Award for using his talents, gifts, and leadership ability to create a better future for Iowa.

Sorensen is actively involved in community and economic development organizations. He is a member of the board of directors and treasurer for the Iowa Business Council. He serves on the board of directors for the Iowa Business Growth Company, a Small Business Administration 504 lender, and Iowa Community Development, a certified development company.

Sorensen has served on the boards of the Iowa Taxpayers Association, the Iowa Newspaper Foundation, the Iowa PBS Foundation, the Des Moines Community Playhouse, Meals from the Heartland, the Iowa 4-H Foundation and as a United Way volunteer. He is past council president for Faith Lutheran Church in Clive.
